Proximath™ in the Classroom
Proximath™ in the Classroom
Proximath is a free daily word game that builds mathematical and language skills simultaneously. Every letter in the alphabet has a number — A=1, B=2, all the way to Z=26. Students guess a hidden word and tiles show exactly how far away each letter is from the correct one, with arrows showing which direction to go. It is free to use, requires no download, works on any device and is appropriate for students aged 9 and over.
Curriculum Links
Proximath supports several areas of the UK National Curriculum. In Mathematics it develops number line understanding, calculation of distances and differences, addition and subtraction within 26, and systematic logical reasoning. In English it builds vocabulary, spelling pattern recognition, word structure awareness and alphabet knowledge. The game naturally encourages students to think about the alphabet as a structured number system — a concept that underpins both mathematical and linguistic understanding.
How to Use Proximath in a Lesson
Proximath works well as a starter activity, a brain warm-up or an early finisher task. Project the game on your classroom screen and work through the daily Morning word as a class — students discuss each guess and the class votes on the next letter to try. Alternatively students can play individually on tablets or laptops. The game takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and a new word is available every day at midnight, making it a sustainable daily classroom habit.
Three Daily Challenges
Proximath offers three daily word challenges at increasing difficulty levels. Morning Mode uses five letters and is the most accessible — recommended for classroom use. Midday Mode uses six letters and removes some directional clues, increasing the challenge. Evening Mode uses seven letters with no directional arrows — suitable for more advanced students. All three modes are free to play and reset daily.
Accessibility
Proximath includes a built-in colour blind mode that switches the tile palette to the Wong colour blind friendly palette, ensuring the game is accessible to students with colour vision deficiency. The game works on desktop computers, tablets and mobile phones without requiring any installation or account creation.
Free to Use
Proximath is completely free for classroom use. Students do not need to create an account to play the Morning game. There are no advertisements shown during gameplay. Simply visit proximath.com and start playing — no sign up, no download, no cost.
